Warm Weather Is Around The Corner, Have You Checked Your AC Unit?
The seasons are passing by quicker than ever and with the incoming warmer weather comes the time to turn on your AC unit. In Texas, it can get hot quickly and most homeowners overlook their AC unit until there is a problem. However, there are certain steps you can take to ensure that your AC unit will be running efficiently and smoothly for many years to come. If you think your unit isn’t working properly here are some maintenance measures to take before calling a Texas HVAC contractor.
Air Filter
Often times homeowners forget to change the air filter which can lead to undue stress and wear and tear on the AC unit. If you are experiencing reduced airflow from your vents or you notice your home is taking longer than usual to cool, this is the first thing you should check. In the future you should replace your HVAC filter at least once every couple of months, in some cases more often, to prevent unnecessary HVAC strain.
Thermostat
Although this may seem absurd if you believe your system isn’t operating properly check your thermostat settings. This is one of the most common causes of HVAC service calls because residents accidentally change the temperature or the air type without noticing it. Ensuring the thermostat temperature is where you want it to be, the proper air type is selected, and that the system is turned on are great ways to solve this common problem.
Obstructions
Sometimes the AC unit can become frozen if the supply vents or filters become blocked. This happens because the cold air backs up into the system and builds up until ice forms on the unit, shutting it off. Once you have cleared the obstructions from your system it should begin working properly. If your system does not begin working correctly you will need to contact a Texas HVAC contractor.
Power Supply
Most AC units have a power switch located near the unit that looks and operates like a light switch. If this switch accidentally gets flipped off it can lead to the unit shutting down and leaving you without cold air. If your unit is not running at all this is the first thing you should check. If you are unable to locate a similar switch near your AC unit try checking your circuit breaker for a tripped or blown fuse.
Panel Switch
Air handling units are equipped with switches that shut down the unit when it is opened. The panels on an air handling unit are typically installed with screws to keep them from coming loose but sometimes it can still happen. It is also possible that the panel was not re-secured properly after changing the air filter. This is an easy fix that you can certainly complete yourself all you need to do is tighten the screw that is holding the panel this should deactivate the switch prompting your unit to turn on.
Preventative Maintenance
In order to ensure your AC unit runs smoothly each year you should schedule preventative maintenance with a Texas HVAC contractor. A certified technician will come to your home and perform the maintenance by cleaning the coils on your condenser unit, checking the refrigerant level, lubricating moving parts, running a general system test, and replacing the air filters as needed. Additionally, the technician will inspect the drains, fan motor and blades, tubing, electrical components, and ductwork. Having preventative maintenance performed yearly on your unit can keep you from paying large repair bills and reduce your electric costs as well.
